WHAT IS BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU?
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a self-defense system, martial art and combat sport system that focuses on grappling. Brazilian jiu-jitsu was developed from Kodokan judo (newaza). Judo was brought to Brazil by Mitsoyu Maeda who taught Judo to Carlos Gracie, who then taught Helio Gracie.
The two Gracies refined the art to form Gracie Jiu Jitsu. Gracie Jiu Jitsu focuses on techniques that can be applied by a smaller, weaker opponent to survive and overcome a larger or stronger one. Jiu Jitsu translated means “The Gentle Art”. Its emphasis is on controlling the opponent through movement and position leading to submission.
